The lore

Production on 2001: A Space Odyssey began in December 1965 at MGM Studios in Boreham Wood, England. The film opened in New York on April 3, 1968 — fourteen months before Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969. In between, Stanley Kubrick and his team consulted with NASA, Boeing, and IBM, using their technical advisers and receiving corporate design input in exchange for logo placement on screen.

The Library of Congress added the film to its National Film Registry in 1991, citing it as one of the most technically rigorous depictions of space travel ever committed to celluloid. The LOC's own essay notes that 2001 "premiered in New York City about a year before Neil Armstrong's historic walk on the moon."

That proximity has never fully receded from the cultural imagination. The front-projection system Kubrick developed for the "Dawn of Man" sequence — a technique that created flawless location composites on a soundstage — was, at the time, the state of the art in photorealistic staging.

Whether or not you believe the timeline is a coincidence depends entirely on how you read a production schedule.
