The lore

The bastion fort — the trace italienne — emerged in early 15th-century Italy as a response to gunpowder artillery. The angled walls and projecting points were designed to eliminate dead zones in defensive fire. They worked. By the 16th century, the form had spread across Europe as standard military doctrine.
