The lore

Derinkuyu maintained a stable underground temperature regardless of the surface above Cappadocia — blistering summer heat, Anatolian winters, or the approach of an Arab raiding party in the 8th century CE. The city did not require the surface for climate, water, food production, or spiritual life. It had all of it on its own terms, carved into volcanic tuff across 18 levels.

The second floor held a barrel-vaulted Byzantine missionary school. Adjacent rooms served as study halls. Below that: wine presses, oil cellars, stables with carved feeding troughs, communal kitchens whose smoke was routed through dispersal chimneys so nothing visible would rise above ground. On the seventh level, a cruciform church. Throughout: more than 50 ventilation shafts, a 55-meter central well, and passages sealed by circular stone doors that could only be moved from inside.

This was not emergency shelter. It was a city with a floor plan and a maintenance schedule — one that managed to sustain populations for months without sunlight, and to do so invisibly from the outside.

The name Derinkuyu was assigned by the surface. The people who lived below had their own word for it: Elengubu. The translation is older than any record that has survived.

Subterranean Boulevard is the main drag of that city. The torches have been burning the whole time.
