The lore

Beneath Nevşehir Province in central Turkey, at approximately 38°N 34°E, the volcanic tuff of Cappadocia holds at least 200 documented subterranean complexes. The deepest reaches 85 meters. The largest housed 20,000 people — livestock included — across 18 carved levels, with more than 50 ventilation shafts supplying air to rooms that have not seen daylight in over a thousand years.

That is the established record. And then, in 2012, a demolition crew in Nevşehir knocked through the floor of an urban renewal project and found a tunnel. Geophysical surveys put the new complex at nearly five million square feet — a third larger than anything previously excavated, with corridors estimated to run as deep as 371 feet. Smithsonian covered it. Archaeologists dated it back 5,000 years.

The surface city does not know what is below it. It rarely does.

There is a specific grammar to how underground civilizations are built: narrow passages that force invaders single-file, stone doors that roll only from the inside, ventilation systems engineered to sustain populations for months. These are not the marks of temporary refuge. They are the marks of a parallel city — one that was meant to function indefinitely, without reference to whatever was happening above.

The Inner World is not a theory. It is a floor plan.
