The lore

Between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. on March 13, 1997, an estimated ten thousand witnesses across a 300-mile corridor from Henderson, Nevada through Phoenix to Tucson reported a massive V-shaped formation of lights crossing the Arizona sky in complete silence. The object appeared to block the stars behind it as it passed overhead. Witnesses included a former Air Force pilot who became Arizona's governor, a commercial pilot who logged the sighting with air traffic control at Sky Harbor, and families in Prescott Valley who watched it drift overhead for several minutes.

The Air Force's official response: illumination flares dropped by A-10s during a training exercise at the Barry M. Goldwater Range. The flares appeared at 10:00 p.m. The V-formation was tracked two hours earlier.

Governor Fife Symington initially staged a press conference in which a staffer appeared in an alien costume. He later stated, on the record, that he personally observed the craft and that it was "otherworldly." He waited a decade to say so publicly.

No investigation was formally opened. No radar data was released. The corridor it crossed was treated as an administrative inconvenience.
